The other night I found myself at Heritage Tavern in Madison, which happens to have passion for Malört, the famously bitter Chicago liquor. They even have a special listing on the menu for “The Malört Thing,” a “Daily Changing Cocktail Featuring Malört.” I couldn’t resist.
The drink I ended up with was called “Bitter Blood,” an odd effervescent combination of floral, citrus, herbal, and ginger. It wasn’t nearly as bitter as I was expecting given the name and it’s focus on Malört, and was honestly rather enjoyable to have outdoors on a sunny day.
I asked nicely, and the bartender was willing to share the recipe with me:
- 3/4 parts Lemon Juice
- 1/2 parts Simple Syrup
- 1/4 Parts Solerno
- 1/4 Parts Luxardo Bitter
- 3/4 Parts Saint Germain
- 1 1/2 Parts Malört
Shake the mixture and pour into an ice filled collins glass, and then top with (Fever Tree) Ginger Beer.
